If you look like your passport photo, you're not well enough to travel

Travel Insurance Advice

With all the money you’re saving on our Specials at the moment you might like to consider spending a little of that on some extra protection for you and your traveling companions….
Whilst we at The Reef Resort offer our excellent Hurricane Guarantee policy, you may also wish to take out a formal Travel Insurance policy to cover you for those unplanned occurrences that cannot be foreseen with any amount of trip planning. Please note that we do not sell Travel Insurance, but on this page we do offer you information to help you research and make your own decisions.
We don’t worry about Hurricanes here (we are prepared, but we don’t worry !), as even though a number of Hurricanes typically occur each year, the Atlantic basin is a big place, and the chances of any one island getting hit are remote. However, if tropical storm worries are stopping you from coming to the Caribbean at what is a great time of year to travel, then if Travel Insurance addresses those worries, we say go for it !
Travel insurance will typically cost about 4-8% of the cost of your trip, but if you factor in the great rates and special deals available throughout the Caribbean for travel during Hurricane Season, you will still save much more than the cost of your travel insurance if you choose to travel at this time of year.
We hope you find this information useful to you in planning your visit to The Reef, and, above all, as Bobby McFerrin says, “Don’t Worry, be Happy” !

Romance at The Reef

Well look who's dancing now!

We snapped Jonette and Gary from California (staying at The Reef this week) enjoying a smooch on the patio at Castro's Hideaway.

Who said romance isn't alive in 2005?! (We've got a habit of bringing that out in people).

Moos Flash

Cows in the mooood for an adventure on the loose this morning outside The Reef Resort.

As you can see the farmer in his truck was already on the case by the time the camera was ready for this shot, but the ladies were milking it for all it was worth ; )

Eco-team build Eco-hut

Activities begin today from the new Ecoventures Beach Hut (situated at the far right of the beach heading from your condo).

The Ecoventures staff (left to right: Joey, Dave and Steve) spent Maintenance Week refurbishing and re-roofing 'Eco-hut' ready for the winter season.

Joey took time to give us an insight into the fine art of thatching. He was taught the age-old skill by another wise Eastender named Overton McLaughlin.

The Silver Thatch Palm fronds (native only to the Cayman Islands) are first of all made into Jonkets (derived from a Middle English word meaning 'rush-basket' if you were curious - or even if you weren't, now you know).

The Jonket is made by using a folding and stripping technique that creates a triangular shape, allowing water to run off easily. They're attached to the roof frame using another technique but Joey said if he told us about that one AS WELL AS the Jonketing, he'd have to kill us. So we'll leave the rest to the imagination.

According to Joey the palm fronds should be picked on the day of the full moon. Caymanian tradition says that the thatch should then last for 6 stealthy years; Which is a good job, as it took almost 200 fronds to cover the Eco-hut.

Staff Appreciation Day

Let's see....Staff? Check.... Music? Check.... Bar? Check....
That would mean the Staff Appreciation Day party has already started!

Activities Director Leona is doing what she does best, heading up the action as M.C.
"Anybody know how long this guy's been working here?"

Hard to step out of the role I guess...someone is soon making the unexpected guest feel welcome.

Party time holds no prisoners - we spied Kel Thompson, Owner of the Reef giving Clive the Security Guard a run for his money on the dance-floor in front of Castro's Hideaway. (Notice it's daylight - we all need to get a good night's sleep before our guests arrive tomorrow, it's only 5.30pm and the party is in full swing)

Now where's my Rum Punch refill?? Anybody??

End of Maintenance Week at The Reef

A very busy maintenance week 2005 at The Reef comes to an end. Most of our staff members plus an additional group of cleaners were busy deep cleaning all the units, the restaurant & beach bar, painting the interior and exterior of the resort, servicing all electrical appliances and lots more. Also, some of us were in the office covering phones and emails.
Alone Castro took it easy, laid back and enjoyed having his ‘living room’ cleaned and his wings scratched afterwards :)

Now everybody is looking forward to our Staff Appreciation Party this afternoon and we will make sure to tell you about it!

Hurricane Rita

We have received several emails from concerned friends owners of The Reef, so we want to let you all know that Hurricane Rita passed several hundred miles to the North of Grand Cayman so had no direct impact on us apart from little rain early this morning.

We are, however, thinking of all of our friends in the Gulf region, both those who were impacted by Katrina and those who are now bracing for Rita. We wish you all the best, stay safe!

Sheila the Gardener, busy while the sun shines

Maintenance Week work continues as Sheila Wilson, one of our gardening team, tends to the brightly colored plants near the entrance to the Thirsty Surfer.

After a week of hard work cleaning, scrubbing and polishing things up, tomorrow is Staff Appreciation Day. So companies from around the island have donated prizes for the staff to win - including meals out and flights to Little Cayman! Lucky us!

Check out the blog tomorrow for a piece of the action.

Dave is a Dummy

While the staff have a break for lunch we thought you'd like to see what they've been up to on the first morning of Maintenance Week. Representatives from all sections of the staff can now confidently say that they can help in an emergency.

While he may look like he's enjoying the rest, and the attention, Super Dave (of 'Ecoventures') is working hard playing the dummy for the staff First Aid Course today.

As Leona (Activities Director) demonstrates, you can feel confident in knowing that when you stay at The Reef Resort, you're in safe (latex covered!) hands!

Spring Cleaning - in the Fall...

We're closed this week for annual maintenance. The whole resort is getting a deep clean and annual maintenance on all systems. Today we are also having a number of staff taking a first aid certification course, as part of a first aid plan that includes an AED.

The only department that is operating as usual this week is the reservations department, who are working overtime taking bookings at the special rates posted last week. If you were thinking of making a booking at those rates, make the call/email soon, availability is fast running out !

The Reef says goodbye to Linera

Last Friday we said a sad farewell to Linera Grant, who has been a familiar face behind the front desk since shortly after we opened our doors in May 2000. From a shy young school leaver, she has matured into a confident, able and highly professional young woman who we were proud to have be the first face our guests would see as they entered the resort.

Still, life moves on, and Linera has decided to try her luck in the "big city" of George Town, and we wish her well.

I am sure all friends of The Reef will miss her smiling face, not to mention that incredible foghorn laugh, you know, the one that sounds disturbingly like the squawk of Castro the cockatoo..hmm.. methinks those two spent too much time together over the years in that lobby !

Castaways' Cove progress report - Sep 9th, 2005

Update on Sep 14th... this morning the third floor slab is being poured... we should see the roof taking shape in a few weeks !

Per a request from caribbeansun, I braved the 90 degree heat at 10am this morning to take this picture of construction progress on the current phase of Castaways' Cove.

As you can see, the basement and first two storeys are completed, and the crew is preparing to pour the slab for the third (top) floor.

Work is moving fast so the roof should be on pretty soon, at which point the progress will become much less visible, as the workers will move inside to start "finishing" work.

Vote for The Reef as Grand Cayman's Leading Hotel !

Ok, this one is just for fun.

I do look on most of these industry awards as being pretty spurious, but when I see people making mileage out of winning a "World Travel Award" as a top hotel, then go to the website and see that nominations are based on the voting the previous year, it makes me suspicious of such a closed "club".

Anyway, let's test the power of the internet and referrals from this blog to other web forums, emails etc.

If you think that The Reef Resort is Grand Cayman's Leading Hotel (of course!), please visit the World Travel Awards 2005 website here , then scroll down the page to the following category :

Grand Cayman's Leading Hotel

Westin Casuarina Resort & Spa
Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort
The Grand Cayman Courtyard Hotel by Marriott
Other:
Where it says "other", check that button and type in The Reef Resort.

If everyone who reads this blog enters, and you all cover the other internet forums and tell a few friends to vote, we could shock the vote counters.. or at least get on the ballot next year.

Thanks in advance for your support (boy, this sounds like politics!)

What New Orleans people are all about

I have visited New Orleans on numerous occasions, and always felt that people from that city have the strongest identification with their home city of any city I have visited in the US.

The following letter reflects this very well... a) they love their city, b) they are resilient, so c) they will be back... and those sentiments are the same as Caymanians felt after Ivan last year.

From columnist Chris Rose of The Times-Picayune www.nola.com

Dear America,

I suppose we should introduce ourselves: We're South Louisiana.

We have arrived on your doorstep on short notice and we apologize for that, but we never were much for waiting around for invitations. We're not much on formalities like that.

And we might be staying around your town for a while, enrolling in your schools and looking for jobs, so we wanted to tell you a few things about us. We know you didn't ask for this and neither did we, so we're just going to have to make the best of it.

First of all, we thank you. For your money, your water, your food, your prayers, your boats and buses and the men and women of your National Guards, fire departments, hospitals and everyone else who has come to our rescue.

We're a fiercely proud and independent people, and we don't cotton much to outside interference, but we're not ashamed to accept help when we need it. And right now, we need it.

Just don't get carried away. For instance, once we get around to fishing again, don't try to tell us what kind of lures work best in your waters.

We're not going to listen. We're stubborn that way.

You probably already know that we talk funny and listen to strange music and eat things you'd probably hire an exterminator to get out of your yard.

We dance even if there's no radio. We drink at funerals. We talk too much and laugh too loud and live too large and, frankly, we're suspicious of others who don't.

But we'll try not to judge you while we're in your town.

Everybody loves their home, we know that. But we love South Louisiana with a ferocity that borders on the pathological. Sometimes we bury our dead in LSU sweatshirts.

Often we don't make sense. You may wonder why, for instance - if we could only carry one small bag of belongings with us on our journey to your state - why in God's name did we bring a pair of shrimp boots?

We can't really explain that. It is what it is.

You've probably heard that many of us stayed behind. As bad as it is, many of us cannot fathom a life outside of our border, out in that place we call Elsewhere.

The only way you could understand that is if you have been there, and so many of you have. So you realize that when you strip away all the craziness and bars and parades and music and architecture and all that hooey, really, the best thing about where we come from is us.

We are what made this place a national treasure. We're good people. And don't be afraid to ask us how to pronounce our names. It happens all the time.

When you meet us now and you look into our eyes, you will see the saddest story ever told. Our hearts are broken into a thousand pieces.

But don't pity us. We're gonna make it. We're resilient. After all, we've been rooting for the Saints for 35 years. That's got to count for something.

OK, maybe something else you should know is that we make jokes at inappropriate times.

But what the hell.

And one more thing: In our part of the country, we're used to having visitors. It's our way of life.

So when all this is over and we move back home, we will repay to you the hospitality and generosity of spirit you offer to us in this season of our despair.

That is our promise. That is our faith.

Someone who is actually in New Orleans and online !

This is not about Cayman, but after Ivan we are all thinking of those in New Orleans.

These guys here are live in downtown New Orleans, the power of blogging is astonishing !

Latest from Outpost Crystal
Thanks again to all of you sending us kind words and support via IMs and the blog. The sheer quantity is staggering. It's amazing to think that so many people are aware of my insignificant existence.

Now for the Team SOTI's 9:30 news report.

As has become their nightly routine, police formed up in 2 rows of 4 cars on Poydras at dusk and started driving around city blocks over and over. I saw some one car stop at a group of people camped out on a Camp Street sidewalk and question them, but then the cops drove off and left them alone.

As I reported earlier, a lot of people were bussed out to Dallas or somewhere from Camp Street, and that combined with a US Marshalls presence along Poydras from Loyola Ave to St. Charles really thinned out the pedestrian flow down Poydras. There are definitely a lot fewer people on the streets tonight.

Apparently the Marines coming in are Reservists not Active Duty. As far as I'm concerned, Marines are Marines are Marines, and they're always welcomed by Outpost Crystal.

Outpost Crystal is still secured and still kicking. We've got people begging us to leave, but that's not going to happen. We might lose Charlie Squad depending on internect connectivity, but Alpha Squad and Bravo Squad are going nowhere until New Orleans' infrastructure is rebuilt or declared permanently and irrevocably destroyed. As far as I'm concerned, this building is my post, and it will not be abandoned until I'm properly relieved.

I have some downtime for a bit tonight, so I'll be hanging out.
