New York Direct with Cayman Air!!

You read correctly!! Starting on June 23, 2007, Cayman Airways will once again be flying direct to New York City. The best part? The introductory fare is US$388 ROUND TRIP(taxes not included), as long as tickets are purchased before April 15, 2007.

The airline plans to offer flights thrice weekly as follows.

JFK to Grand Cayman:- Thursdays, Sundays and Mondays departing at 9am.

Grand Cayman to JFK:- Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, departing at 4:00pm

18 hole Golf is back in Cayman !

Great news for golfers coming to Cayman, the Links at Safehaven golf course, after much renovation and upgrading (including all new turf and greens) has today re-opened to the general public.

Rates are US $40 for 9 holes and US $70 for 18 holes for all non-members who may book tee times 24 hours in advance. A 24 hour cancellation policy is in effect.

Important note : the Links does not yet have golf carts back, so golfers must walk the course.

A limited number of rental clubs area available on on a first come, first serve basis for US $35 per set whether you are playing 9 or 18 holes.

The course is still closed on Tuesday and Wednesday every week with tee times starting at 8am on weekdays (Mon, Thurs, Fri) and 7:30am on the weekends.

Golfers must have a starting time to play and we require that all players wear proper golf attire (collared shirts).

Guests at The Reef may book through our concierge, or simply call the Links at 949-5988.

Your intrepid reporter is a member at the Links and I'd note that the course is in fantastic condition, particularly the greens, which run true. One warning though, the greens are very, very fast, ice rink fast in fact !

Powering a small city ?

The latest addition to The Reef is not terrifically subtle (and that is an understatement!). As many of our owners and frequent guests are very much aware, Hurricane Ivan devastated Cayman in September 2004.

After Ivan, The Reef was forced to close due to over $7m of hurricane damage to the resort, but was the first resort to re-open (in January 2005). We would have been in a position to open even earlier if we had not had to wait for power until December 2004.

We therefore decided that we wouldn't rely on a series of small generators in case of future disasters or prolonged power outages of any kind, but instead would get a big (umm... that picture is a 40 foot container !) generator with oodles of power capacity.

It took us a while to source this enormous/gigantic (please comment with your choice of the ideal adjective!) generator, but we recently built up some concrete stands and installed the generator.

Now, this is not exactly the most attractive thing in the world, but it is a major and positive addition !

Our resort manager, Mr. Lawrence Haughton, and his team of "green thumbed" gardeners will be coming up with a way to surround the generator and let plants grown around it to screen it, then the only time anyone will know it is there will be in the event that we have a prolonged power outage where it will be fired up....it does have a lot of sound deadening, but it won't be silent by any means !
